Malevolent Grain by Wolves in the Throne Room

5...according to our on Thu 26 Feb, 2009.

Now the logical conclusion to all serious alternative music (rather than the noise route) should be Wolves in The Throne Room who combine what was once supposed to be Black Metal with shoegaze/post rock textures. They seem to have ditched the harder edge already & embraced a more melodic path, employing a female vocalist for this 2 track journey, titled 'Malevolent Grain'. The first track is pretty damn impressive, sounding more like the recent Jesu stuff, foreboding, yet cleansing and pure, the noise cascading round your ears but caressing rather than damaging your nervous system, Jamie Myers voice sad, powerful & rich. She makes this dense & hauntingly melodic epic her own, like Julianne Regan if she listened to Godspeed & Isis. Except cooler, of course! I've not time to comment on the other side but, honestly, 'A Looming Resonance' is a seriously impressive tune, a paean to purer pre-industrial times, a pro-Earth ecological odyssey that just oozes class.
