One Degree Kelvin by DP Ram/Ashen

The first in a new series of 12"s from Sheffield is in and it goes by the name of One Degree Kelvin. The first side's by DP Ram and it's pretty intiguing. He's got two tracks with the first being a feast of scattered beats and occasional dub bass intrusions, complete with an echoey man going "Jah". That probably makes it sound like a million me-too records that've been out in the last few years but it really isn't that way at all - it's harsh and heavy stuff that's broken up and glued back together more to tickle the brain than wobble the dancefloor. His second is a denser production that's getting positive comments from all around the office. On the flip it's a man called Ashen who takes a more Dusk and Blackdown sort of approach with his Eastern-flecked dub soudscapes. If you've been thinking the dub's been missing from dubstep recently this might be a little bit of a remedy for you! Cool stuff.

Kelvin house producer DP Ram's tracks on side one show an overt free dub influence as beats tangle with a deep roots vibe whilst swaggering synth-lines come flying through the mayhem, rolling their eyes and gnashing their teeth. Side two features Ashen, beginning with a cool downtempo middle eastern mystery, before moving on to the jazz influenced Wadada.
