5...according to our on Thu 19 Feb, 2009.

You should see the front cover of The Wire. Will Oldham really does rock the paedophile look. Anyway the reason I mention The Wire is that I've just noticed they've reviewed this Pop Ambient 2009 compilation CD. I will try to do the same using fewer long words as I'm a thick idiot from Leeds who likes football and Empire of the Sun. Anyway so far this sounds absolutely beautiful. The opening track by Klimek has some gorgeous treated horns, Sylvain Chauveau does his Max Richter type neo classical beautiful thing, Mint do a subdued dark ambient piano and viola thing. Popnoname is gorgeous gorgeous dubby ambience, Jurgen Paape does a kingd of Tubuler Bells thing, Marsen Jules references Neil Young and again its beautiful dubby ambience, sounding somewhat like waves rolling against the shore. Tim Hecker coms up with the best thing yet with cascading electronic sounds a little Seefeel in there....do I need to go on? The remaining tracks by Andrew Thomas, Burger /Voigt and The Fun Years keep up the remarkably high quality of this compliation. It really has been put together with a deft touch. The way I'm feeling today i'm gonna give it 10 out of 10. Also if you buy the vinyl you get the CD free so you can drift off to sleep to this album in a beautiful haze without having to turn the record over. On Kompakt.

Curated by KOMPAKT co-founder WOLFGANG VOIGT (aka GAS,BURGER/INK, etc), POP AMBIENT remains one of Kompkat’s most anticipated annual releases. A huge favorite for Kompakt fans and essential music for getting through the cold winter months.

One of the most striking things many will find about this year’s POP AMBIENT are the many new faces compared to the historically familiar roster that has graced previous editions.

Leading noise-experimental producer TIM HECKER of ALIEN8 and KRANKY fame joins in with a tremendous
contribution that builds wave after wave in textured noise and melody. BOOMKAT’s Best Album of 2008 winners THE FUN YEARS take loop melody and turn it inside out with an astounding guitar based tune.

POP AMBIENT 2009 turns to the mighty imprint TYPE and the esteemed producer SYLVAIN CHAUVEAU with 2 contributions of untreated works from the lovely NUAGE full length that straddle his work with a small ensemble and his own
piano and guitar performances. WOLFGANG VOIGT himself appears under the guise of MINT with this deep and somberly moving piece and also together with longtime production partner JOERG BURGER as BURGER/VOIGT with a GAS-eous remix of JURGEN PAAPE’s AUSKING and a highly emotive original. POPNONAME shows off his diverse talent with a Kraut-y sunscape of majestic measure. Finally, POP AMBIENT favorite KLIMEK in stunning splendor...the horns of heaven ring loud to open the compilation and together with HUSAK, he brings POP AMBIENT 2009 to an end in a majestic roar.

Vinyl format comes with CD version included.
