The second release from Structurally Sound comes from the Chichester-based Disconcerts. The explosive 3-piece, all well under their 20’s, have created their unique sound away from the prying eyes of the so-called ‘London Scene’. With a disdain for fashion trends dictating music, they create an exciting brand of ‘binary-punk’ with drums that suggest the skittish, clipped beats of early jungle being played on a Quincy Jones-produced disco kit. The bass and guitar work in counterpoint to create non-melodies which sound like a more musical form of fax machine-static, while the vocals sound part stage-crooner and part street-preacher. The two tracks on this, their debut single, was produced and mixed by Neils Children’s John Linger and represent the bands stripped-down and wired sound. Finally agreeing to play shows in London, they have wow’d audiences with 20 minute sets of chants, breaks and the occasional chorus. It is as euphoric as it is disconcerting.
...according to ChrisC Candy.
Disconcerts are without a doubt my favorite new band, and this is a good example of why. The strange, post beat drumming, the spoken word vocals hiding just below the surface... it has it all.
