DJ Rupture and Andy Moor's debut CD Patches brings together the unlikely combination of guitar and turntables to powerful effect. Guitarist Moor arrives from the post-punk exuberance of the The Ex, Dog Faced Hermans, and Kletka Red. Rupture came through his adventurous and influential DJing which led him to a stint as turntablist with Norah Jones'old band old band and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. Both share a nonstop musical curiosity. Although they come from opposite musical worlds (not to mention different continents), after playing together a few times, they quickly found a common language, uniting Moor's exploratory fretboard antics and saw-toothed guitar timbres with Rupture's warm bass riddims and rich soundscapes. While his critically acclaimed 2008 mix CD Uproot showcased Rupture at his deep-blend finest, Patches finds the open-minded DJ exploring a totally different area of turntablism, drawing on hiphop battle skills and avant-garde craziness to push the 'turntable-as-instrument' and interact with Moor in a rapid-fire way. These 15 tracks were recorded live at the duo's shows across Europe. Patches is hypnotic. Catchy melodies underpinned by Rupture's beats collide with virtuoso precision into angular displacement and dissonance. Improvised live, you can hear ideas being explored with quick reflexes and the sensitivity of musicians who listen, working dynamic shifts with confidence. Occasionally they veer into total free improvisation, with Rupture conjuring up extraordinary sounds purely from vinyl manipulation and Moor making his guitar sparkle like it's strung with highly charged telephone cables - but they always manage to keep a central pulse going and never seem to lose their way. Other moments show breathtaking harmonic control as the musicians' soundfields melt together into a cohesive whole, fragile and beautiful.
