Drone Trailer by MV & EE With The Golden Road

4...according to our on Thu 22 Jan, 2009.

MV & EE, Alt folk's golden couple. They've a new LP/CD on DiCristina called 'Drone Trailer' and it's a goody. 'Anyway' opens the set up, surprising us by being a rather splintered & skewed space-blues rocker, proper sideways freak-rock. It's a lot like mid-period Royal Trux when they were still a bit unhinged, rambling and discordant and the M/F vocal harmonies sound way cool, the whole thing really kicking you in the balls in a pleasant nudgy way. 'The Hungry Stones' has Mr. Valentine doing his finest Daniel Johnston over some gently strummed acoustic with a meandering electric droning off trippily in the 'backyard' and bouts of sympathetic harmonica. 'Weatherhead Hollow' is another stripped-down freeform rambler, full of intriguing shapes & hushed vocals. Title track 'Drone Trailer' begins as "psychedelic raga time" before arriving at a lap steel country oasis - Erika's vocals lovely in their hazy sadness, interspersed with Matt's tremulous yearning. I'm unable to review the last two tracks for fear of revealing too much (or else i'm far too lazy). I really like this lovely pair of hippies & their cohorts. They make me feel well peaceful & organic. I wanna go campfire with them. CD/LP

Orbiting the earth in Vermont is Matt MVValentine, once thebrawn of the Tower Recordings, and Erika EEElder, CEOof Heroine Celestial Agriculture and The MV & EE MedicineShow. Together with their dog Zuma, they run the Child ofMicrotones library of exploratory musicsometimes their ownlunar blues, sometimes finger-picking-style noise/space, sometimeslonesome frontier folk.MV & EE have landed at the DiCristina Building bearingDrone Trailer, featuring The Golden Road: Doc Dunn (pedalsteel, guitar, harmony), Mike Smith (bass, fender rhodes, harmony),and James Anderson (drums, engineer). You may recognizethese names as part of MV & EEs touring band whenthey scorched across New England and the Rust Belt en routeto Terrastock this past June. Drone Trailer is a consolidationof the previous musical high-life of the duos space shantiesfor the 21st century. In other words, MV & EE explore theirunique mix of lunar raga and astral string band music, witha couple deep-space burners/covert jams such as opening blastAnywaythrown in to bust it all open. Nobody is gonna mindif they hear a little Crazy Horse and prime-era Dead here aswell!Highly recommended follow up to a slew of great records on Ecstatic Peace and Timelag.
