Paul May & Platform - Broken Hulk Display

Broken Hulk Display by Paul May & Platform

Paul May + Platform arrive in my lugholes next, brandishing a bag of tools, an old drum kit made of plumbing & biscuit tins and possibly an eerie glockenspiel /theramin set up. And an echo machine. They then proceed to take all this dubious musical instrumentation into a pitch black dark shed and quietly stagger around in a meditative fashion, brandishing their sticks and bits of sound manipulating trickery like two pissed zen warriors searching for the new sound. As far as de- constructive avant-garde gear goes, I love the dub/echo chamber effects on 'Broken Hulk Display' and have to admit as a display of electro acoustic and experimental percussive sound, this CD is quite the cookie. I'm feeling utterly relaxed considering the jarring unpredictability of it all. If yr a bit of a Wire reading beardy-weirdy you'll love this. Me, I haven't a shelf big enough to hold a dictionary containing all the words that they use, I'm well archaic. This is a very absorbing listening though! CD only.

‘Broken Hulk Display’ is the first fruits of an ongoing collaboration between avant-garde improv drummer Paul May and sonic manipulator (and fellow drummer) Matthew Atkins (AKA Platform). Having know each other for the best part of 15 years the pair always intended to work together but, for one reason or another, lost contact and drifted apart. A chance meeting at a gig in North London finally allowed them to hatch the seeds of this long mooted project. Matthew has used tapes provided by Paul of his unique, deconstructive, textured and improvised drumming. Keeping to the spirit of the original performances these recordings have been treated and tinted electronically to create 4 very different sonic landscapes. Striding the sound worlds of free improv, electronica and musique concrete, ‘Broken Hulk Display’ is a unique and original set of tracks that defies easy categorisation. Paul May is a stalwart of the London improv scene ans currently in the duo Ladywoodsman. He has played on albums by Alexander Tucker (ATP records), Duke Garwood (Butterfly), Carolyn Hume (Leo recordings) and Barkingside (Emanem) among others.
