What we say about Bubble Hum

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

I'm having an insomniac night. I wanted to carry on reading Watchmen so I can finish it before that freaking film comes out, just so I can smugly run away from all the geeks in the pub bemoaning it's unsympathetic celluloid deconstruction but instead I'm drawn to this CD by Helvetikone, it's named 'Bubble Hum' and has more ideas and cheeky electronic nous than a 1000 "skwee" 7"s and probably everything Hudson Mohawk hasn't thought of yet. Not to say it's a cross pollination of fashionable styles IE 1/4 Kode 9, a dash of Pole/T++ & a bucket of Flying Tortoise...Lotus. It's just slightly dark, stepping, itchy electronica with subtle grime/techno flourishes but it's mostly like a rich computerized wonderland with a bit of soul if you get my mind. All the buttons and keys are being pressed to create this hugely absorbing & rich stew of knowing electronica. There's some flecks of glitchy experimental hip hop, chirrupping hardware, fleeting vocal samples, some dubby techno beats mingling with hypnotic electro synth refrains. It's a hard album to pin down. Don't get me wrong, we're all on the listen out for fresh sounds here and it's nice to see trends come and go but this CD is quite simply a very interesting, eclectic & satisfying album of modern electronica with tons of classic hallmarks. Astral synths mingle downtown with jacking electro beats, aquatic dub meets Detroit cyber glitch! On towards the end abstract off-beats saunter around your mind stumbling into an unpredictable disembodied breakbeat fighting a fog of angry digital fuzz. There's enough fun here for any real fan of experimental yet accessible electronica, even spots of mild acid thrown in towards the end with some seriously mardy beats headbutting the asteroids into a steel waste paper basket. Huge fun, very compulsive and occasionally awkward, like we like it here. For fans of older Rephlex/Planet Mu before all the kids with baseball caps muscled in ;0/

What the label says about Bubble Hum:

Approximately five years after Helvetikone released his first EP on Digital Gadget/Front, the Berlin artist returns with a full length album. 'Bubble Hum' appears softer, more melodious and mature than his earlier works, but doesn't fail to confront the listener with healthy frostiness and asperity. Eduard Müller, the man behind Helvetikone, has been everything but lazy over the years: His composing is closely linked to the evolution of Renoise, the famous tracker software he programmed and takes care of every day. The worldwide Renoise community is growing, and so is the music of Helvetikone: 'Bubble Hum' offers a raw dose of passionate electronic music no one can rebuff. 'Bubble Hum' by Helvetikone marks the first CD-Release on Digital Gadget/Front, it will soon be followed by a full length by Jeff Pils.
