When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence by Harmonic 313

The Harmonic 313 LP is here. Exciting times, gang! For those that haven't been following the two stellar EPs Mark Pritchard's put out under this name before you can expect a big bassy melting pot of dubstep, hip-hop, electro and techno. As well as the obvious Detroit reference points for an electronica artist (Drexciya, Juan Atkins, blah blah blah) maybe the biggest tribute being paid here is to J Dilla, whose beats are heavily resembled. That sentence looks funny but I think it's OK. I won't go into too much detail as we've covered the EPs pretty well before, and on first listen the tracks that hit the hardest are those released previously (although familiarity can usually be blamed for that), but this is going down a treat in my brain. There is a new ingredient at work here, or at least one that's been brought far more to the fore, in the fashionable Cold War sci-fi paranoia feel that trickles down from the overly wordy album title to the Advisory Circle-esque hauntological (sorry) samples that pop up from time to time.. Just another layer of richness to add to an LP of quality tunes. At first we were a little unsure about how necessary this album was but after a little more time I think it's another consistently excellent release from a bit of a master. When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence is out on CD and LP (with free CD) on Warp.
