Always quite like The Rifles yer knurr. They've a new CD out called 'Great Escape' which judging by the sleeve (band silhouetted against neon backdrop playing their mod hearts out, one wearing pork pie hat) should stink like the cable I just left in the loo 5 minutes ago but works beautifully as a commercial indie pop/rock album. They've got some classic Britpop hallmarks down pat ranging from the Jam/Madness 80's radio/terrace pop to erm....contemporary radio/terrace pop like Kaiser Chiefs/Pigeon Detectives but with much better songs & less cringeworthy lyrics. Some of it's a little banal but they still have a strong sound and some damn feisty tunes spilling with professional pop nous on this latest long player. Nothing quite as great as that debut single from years ago but they're keeping their fringes well trimmed & their songs catchy as you like, bursting with sharp hooks, itchy guitar lines and anthemic choruses. We all agree this band are much better than most of the ladrock idiots out there, a genuine passion for the game sets them apart, rather than just clueless careering. Cheap as well but just until initial copies run dry.....TRACKLISTING: 1 Science In Violence, 2 The Great Escape, 3 Fall To Sorrow, 4 Sometimes, 5 Toerag, 6 History, 7 Winter Calls, 8 Out In The Past, 9 Rome And Julie, 10 The General,
11 For The Meantime,
OVERVIEW: The Rifles burst onto the UK music scene two years ago with the rebellious and attitude laden debut, No Love Lost, an album revealing the hopes and dreams of working-class suburban drudgery. Since then the band have toured relentlessly, playing to over 30,000 people in the UK alone and sold out Brixton Academy on the 21st November. Their fanbase continues to grow and includes names such as Paul Weller, Tim Lovejoy and Oasis. The assault continues with the release of their 2nd album 'Great Escape' on January 26th.
The Rifles, with recent radio singles 'The Great Escape' and 'Fall To Sorrow', have been catapulted up the ladder to their rightful place of music colossus. With Jan 'Stan' Kybert (Weller, Oasis, Bjork) on production duties, singer Joel Stoker, guitarist Luke Crowther, bassist Rob Pyne, and drummer Grant Marsh's spiky guitar sound has been refined to a sharp point of perfection!
