Women
Women
Our album of the week (23rd January 2009)

This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.
If I was in Women I wouldn't have called my album Women. I'd have called it 'are the bane of my cocking life' purely so it could be found on the internet easier. You try searching on Women CD! Anyhoo this album has been out for a while in the US and it's finally surfaced over here now it's all been Pitchforked up. The first time this was played on the stereo I was blown away by it. It's essentially a great experimental rock album but that makes me feel like a bit of a twat so I won't say that. Bits of Panda Bear, Liars, Sonic Youth and This Heat chucked into a massive experimental rock pot and stirred up by Pat Flegel, the frontman of Women. This is an adventurous album with some seriously good song writing. 'Black Rice' is a top tune sounding like a proper good 60's psych pop pastiche. There are some amazing tracks on here but I think this is an album to listen to from start to finish. The first time I heard it I was blown away and repeated listens bring out the subtleties and nuances which are there in spades. It's definitely a singular piece of work which needs to be listened to from start to end. It's a fucking great album and deffo a band to keep an eye over the coming years!!

What their label says...
A lo-fi masterpiece cloaked in layers of vibrato and guitar wash.
Women are one of the most blogged and written about bands of the last six months.
“…Straddles the 1960s divide between the Warhol crowd’s
speed-addled New York cynicism and the echoes of
psychedelic San Francisco that bubbled up across the
pond- in the fey catchy pop of UK groups like The
Zombies”. – Pitchfork.
