Hudson Mohawke makes his debut for Warp with a highly anticipated 6 track EP entitled 'Polyfolk Dance' This Glasgow based producer has been hailed as somewhat of a prodigy and he's certainly talented. This doesn't really blow my socks off but then stuff that gets all hyped up in inevitably a disappointment. However this is accomplished stuff that's going to appeal to fans of Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, some older Luke Vibert stuff etc. While being kind of abstract at times it does retain a real sense of the accessible with some of the sounds and tricks reminiscent of the more interesting stuff happening in R&B. The last tune 'Yonard' is the winner for me with its heavy awkward, staggering beats. The sleeve has his name written from pictures of hands and tits. 12" and CD on Warp.Hudson Mohawke is one of Warp’s star signings of 2008 – making
mixtapes at age 10, making music at 12, and Scottish champion of
both the ITF and UK DMC Championships at age 14 – he remains
the youngest person to reach both finals and has become a respected
music maker mentioned alongside other Warp pioneers Aphex Twin
and Flying Lotus.
· He’s spent the last few months playing shows around the world,
including Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder shows in San Francisco and LA
as well as several US shows with Rustie and a tour of Australia.
· The release has six tracks bursting with flavour - Hudson
Mohawke’s music is as much hip hop as it is electronic as it is
pop and R&B.
