Vapaa are a group that I've never heard of. I opened the case to their self titled CD and was astonished at the 15 member line up. What's on offer here is a colossal 50 minute live recording of improvised freak out that fuses cosmic free jazz with bizarre forest folk. There's a whole load of interesting and weird and wonderful instruments called into action on this psychedelic journey. It's like a big audio mushroom trip with people going bonkers on clarinets, melodica and all sorts... The press release mentions elves and goblins which amused me immensely. Anyone remember the Ghosts and Goblins video game? That kicked 8-bit ass that did.

Recorded live in Vastavirta – club, Tampere, January 2008. Massive 15 head group improvising collective audio-fantasy together on small stage, and mixing sounds of space ambient noise, free jazz freak outs, forest folk melodies & experimental electronic strangeness. Almost 50 minutes of colourful tripping across the absent fluidy minds. Sometimes creepy and dark, sometimes like a blissful sunny day in the meadow with birds (and maybe even Krishna flying in the clouds behind the view), sometimes both these elements together in multiple layers of this cloudy sound, changing the shape in front of our third-ears, like a fairytale from the cosmic psych-o-dust. Washing machine of goblins, ghouls, elves, angels and other-galaxy spirits. All made with different type of synths and effects, clarinet & horns & flutes, drums and percussions, violin, vocals, bouzouki, bass and guitars.
