The Finally LP by Mark Kozelek

5...according to our on Wed 31 Dec, 2008.

Listening to Mark Kozelek is like someone pouring smooth creamy butter in your ears. I'm not really a massive fan of vocals on the whole but Mark Kozelek is permanently invited to come around to my house and sing to me whenever he likes. He wouldn't even have to pay. I'd let him do it for free... such is the buttery goodness of his velvety tones. Confusingly called The Finally LP, the Finally LP is currently CD only so don't go ordering it thinking you're getting it on vinyl you nugget. This is a rarities collection featuring covers and a few hard to get compilation appearances. He covers Kath Bloom's 'Finally' which is utterly sublime... There's also covers of tunes by Willy Oldham, Stephen Sondheim, Low, Husker Du. The cover of Low's 'Lazy' is especially good... so good in fact I went over to the stereo and had to play it again (am slowly turning into my wife... it's only a matter of time). Beautifully paced classic sounding singer songwriter gear with just Mark singing and his guitar. Stripped down lovelyness which makes me weep into keyboard (could do with a clean actually so it's not all bad).

Description:
Over the years Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon and his earlier band, Red House Painters, has gained well deserved praise for his extraordinary songwriting. At the same time he has developed a parallel reputation for his unique covers of other peoples' material.
Many of these tracks were recorded for tribute albums that are now unavailable. Caldo Verde Records has now collected them in a cohesive, 10-song LP titled The Finally LP.
Highlights include a bluegrass version of "Lazy" by Low, "Bedtime Lullaby" from the children's show Yo Gabba Gabba! and an intimate, acoustic version of Stephen Sondhiem's "Send In the Clowns" recorded for the Minneapolis Bridge Disaster Benefit CD. The album also includes radio show rarities, a previously unreleased version of Husker Du's "Celebrated Summer" and two original instrumentals.
