Chanson Sigeru - #1 Dad

Our album of the week (12th December 2008)

#1 Dad by Chanson Sigeru

5...according to our on Thu 11 Dec, 2008.

I really like this Chanson Shigeru CD we've got in on Maomoo/Art Union. #1 Dad is very reminiscent of early Animal Collective as well as Black Dice and certain Boredoms stuff ('Super Coming' from Super Ae is one example), doing that playful technicolour noise thing extremely well.. Very atonal but not abrasive in the least. It's a delightfully swirling cacophony of sounds, smothering your mind with ultra fuzzy lo-fi tones like a giant cuddly fluffmonster who'll be your friend for ever and ever so long as you feed it some cheap, heavily overdriven speakers every now and again. Add Fraggle Rock vocals to the mix and you've got a seriously charming album!

"Chanson Sigeru" is the solo project from Tokyo musician Shingo Shinmachi (member of Tokumaru Shugo & The Magic Band and drummer for legendary band GELLERS. These band supported Why?, Animal Collective, No Age Japan tour).  He was born in Tokyo, 1980 and formed a band together with classmate when he was a junior high-school student. Then the band changed a name as 'GELLERS' and released 1st album "GELLERS" from COMPARE NOTES RECORDS in 2007and they played at Fuji Rock festival same year. Also he has been supporting 'GELLERS' member 'Tokumaru Shugo's live as a toy percussionist. Now he's a member of 'Tokumaru Shugo & The Magic Band'.

His collage illustration has widely attracted the attention and has worked for the artwork of 'Tokumaru Shugo's debut album "EXIT" and Eastern Youth bassist Ninomiya's side project 'Hyoutan'.  Solo project 'Chanson Sigeru' music stretches from free folk, psychedelia, noise, improv, indie rock to Japanese pop that all the sounds like own voice besides the all performances by himself such as the drum, the percussion, guitars, keyboards and the noise recorded with 4-track MTR. "#1 DAD" consists the works between 2005-2008 and mastered at Peace Music by Soichiro Nakamura (engineer of Yura Yura Teikoku, Boris etc.) in September 2008. The all artwork has done by himself.  Will appeal to fans of Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Boredoms, Black Dice, Liars, Deerhoof.
