This Sixtoes CD on Toe Music is lovely. It's called Trick of The Night and it's a CD only affair. Immediately you'll be struck in the face with a high pitched warbly voice you'll either love or hate. It's one of those voices which will either make or break the CD for you. Unusually for me (as I pretty much hate the human voice and everyone who has one) it doesn't bother me, and in fact I actually quite like it. It's fucking miserable music though with its heart in Eastern European folk. Fans of Antony,Beirut, Nick Cave, Matt Elliott etc will dig this maudlin baroque sounding acoustic Eastern European folk miseryfest. I feel like I got the whole review across in that one sentence. Well everything aside the fact the songwriting is smart. The songs are good....very good. I'm suitably impressed by this bands debut. I can heartily recommend this mother.Toe Music in conjunction with Forte Distribution is very proud to announce the release of the debut album by London-based six-piece, SixToes. If the album seems dark, mysterious, perhaps even a little dangerous, it’s with good reason: ‘Trick Of The Night’ was written and recorded in three eerie locations: a cottage in Ely, Cambridgeshire in the grounds of an old mental asylum; in the old warder’s quarters of Holloway prison and in a squat in London. This is music for dark nights with a bottle of whisky. Having already remixed Maps, supported with King Creosote, The Mekons and the toured friends and contemporaries The Mystery Jets, SixToes are one the most exciting and unique bands to watch in 2009. FILE NEXT TO: Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Antony and the Johnsons, Beirut and Bonnie Prince Billy’s ‘I See A Darkness’.

Oh, this is really good. At times even David Sylvian springs to mind - if he joined Beirut!Fantastic album!
