Info:
"The shortcuts are a collection of miniatures I made in June 2004 as a sort of a time-constrained album-concept: to make one finished piece every
evening after a workday during one month, in order to generate as many ideas as I could in little time, almost stream-of-consciousness-like. Any mood,
style, tempo or rhythm would do. Out came twenty wildly varying, mostly sample-based recordings, ranging from just under a minute to four minutes in
length. In spite of - or thanks to - the compulsion-factor I felt it was one of the more satisfactory music projects I've done; as I still like the results I'd
now like to make it available to those who are interested." - Dave Huismans.
2008 has been the year that Dave Huismans, aka 2562/A Made Up Sound, has become firmly established as one of the cutting edge producers in
modern dance and dub-tech - following a series of 12"s which were so sought after most had sold out in advance or their release, the 'Aerial' album
solidified Huismans' reputation as an innovator, with the creation of a record which was immediately hailed as a benchmark at the point where dub
techno and dubstep collide. Back in 2004 and prior to all this, Huismans had begun to form and develop the ideas which would be the building-blocks
for the 2562 sound. Now finally made available, 'Shortcuts' is an illuminating collection of unreleased material created by Huismans, under the 'A Made
Up Sound' moniker, over this period.
A striking collection of restrained ideas, 'Shortcuts' is brimming with variety, yet held together with an absolute underlying coherence which points
ultimately towards the distinct sound of 2562; laid back broken-beats (think Dego or Seiji), jazzy grooves and squelchy electro bass lines, the ambience
of minimal techno combined with fractured synth lines, suggesting influences of down-tempo grooves, instrumental hip hop and laid back 'tronica. And
groove is the primary factor, regardless of the form it takes; each 'Shortcut' is brimming with vibe and style, be it informed by electro, techno, dub-tech,
nu-jazz, or all of the above! One minute we're on a jazzy tip, the next we're drawn towards a menacing, dark cut-up territory - the overall flow is simply
stunning.
'Shortcuts' presents itself to the listener as 'stream-of conciousness-like'; at once so familiar in it's variety of stylistic leanings, at the same time
naturally shifting form with total ease. For a collection of 'experiments', this is a terrifyingly realised album in its own right. And for fans of 2562,
'Shortcuts' exposes a key part of the process which Huismans went through in order to fully realise the potential of his sound - there are parallels to be
drawn between both the 2562 material and Huismans' personal influences. It's no wonder A Made Up Sound is so sought after for remix work, having
remixed tracks for Shed, Quantec and Pattie Blingh.
"In order to keep the original idea alive, postproduction and mastering were kept to a minimum; the shortcuts are pretty much released 'as they were',
in their raw and underproduced state. This is not a new A Made Up Sound album - it's a personal sketchbook from a rainy month in Dutch suburbia
four years ago. I hope you enjoy it." - Dave Huismans.
