HMS Ginafore & King Creosote - Love + Hate = Hate

Love + Hate = Hate by HMS Ginafore & King Creosote

4...according to our on Thu 20 Nov, 2008.

Delectable stargazing folk next from HMS Ginafore & King Creosote. Comin' atcha like Outer Hebridean ambient poetry, flickering's of ancient fireside paeans juxtaposed with the pulse, rattle & whirr of not-so-ancient technology. This isn't "folktronica" though. Nothing so crass, as the KC voiced songs here are more akin to Ivor Cutler remixed by Tangerine Dream or summat! I've long been taken by the outsider folk collective Fence and their brave/stubborn attempts to individualize their rosters sound. You really still can tell when a record is of the Fence pedigree. Rustic, soothing, desolate, comforting as a thick aran sweater in a gale, the gorgeous voice of HMS Ginafore on the "odd" tracks taking me to a snug field hut in the wilderness away from any worries, a single malt in my hand and a pipe stuffed with hearty shag in the other. I'd quite like it if Ms Ginafore were there too although she'd have to get her own pipe. Mine's welded to me lips you see. She could always snuggle up close,Ii'm sure we'd manage......;0) 'Love + Hate = Hate' is a smashing little digipak number.

Earlier this year, KING CREOSOTE set up his Fostex 8-track recorder at his home in Crail, and invited H.M.S. GINAFORE around to record some of her new songs.  The melodies and the devastatingly powerful lyrics were of such a high standard that KC was compelled to pen his own replies to each and every one, for fear he would be dethroned as Fence High Heidyin!

The result, 'LOVE + HATE = HATE', is one of the greatest albums Fence has ever released.

"Ginafore has one of the loveliest female voices to come out of Scotland in recent years- lending a sunny, dreamy vibe to what is pretty much the perfect partnership. 4 STARS ****" The Skinny

"a psychedelic folk album awash with ambient accordions, looping synths and an open book of emotions seeped in the excesses of late-night port glugging" Clash Magazine
