The Common Place is a small autonomous centre for the radical, ecologically & socially aware individual. It's the only haven in the increasingly homogenized consumerist mecca that is Leeds and has been hosting some pretty wild gigs & events in recent years, loads of small bands/artists/poets & performance minded types have graced it's small rickety doors at some point to perform to warm, open minded & enthusiastic audiences and now due to a screening of an anti Police brutality film which showcased West Yorkshire's constabulary in a far from respectable light, they've coincidently had their entire entertainments/refreshments licence revoked. Now, I'm a rational guy and I'm totally up for free speech which I believed was a forgone conclusion within this hallowed isle of ours. Funny how the truth is always distorted/brushed under the carpet when the powers-that-be end up with potential egg flying in their faces. I'm bloody furious about this, it's created a real furore on the Leeds underground as this was one of the last un-corporate venues (a really relaxed & ethically astute centre for folk who are just a little tired with the state society's in) Now the rant is almost over I implore you to take note of the excellent 23 trk comp in aid of the centre which features the likes of Vessels, Gareth S Brown, DJ Donna Summer, Kimya Dawson, Dianne Cluck, Chumbawamba, Sex Patels (!!), Cowtown , White Boys for Gay Jesus & the Seven Inches amongst many other local & international luminaries who've hosted events at the club. Norman Records not being usually one to mix charity with business, this is one cause that's gonna hit us music lovers in the heart if we lose this marvelous space. At least £5 from each CD sale goes straight into the coffers to appeal against this cruel travesty. The club would be grateful of any interest and/or support. Thanks for reading!!
