Japanese Motors - Single Fins and Safety Pins

Single Fins and Safety Pins by Japanese Motors

Unsure what the fuck Vice Records think they're doing. Probably still sulking like girls at losing Fucked Up to Matador, no doubt - their latest hopes now being the frankly awful Japanese Motors. 'Single Fins & Safety Pins' sounds like a lame Modern Lovers/Strokes hybrid that in its own hopeless surf pop universe probably seems authentic in its execution and production but..... Jesus!!!! How can those Vice people slag half the stuff off in their review pages like they're the ultimate hipsters and tastemakers and then go and release an absolute turkey of predictable retro proportions like this? Save your money and buy a Muslims record or a good Jonathan Richman retrospective. The other boys are feeling kinder about it however (actually, we just kind of found it funny - Brett) so maybe check out their Myspace or summat for a less aggressive appraisal. Ltd 7" only.

The most exciting band to emerge from Orange County since the heyday of
Social Distortion and TSOL.

· Hailing from Costa Mesa, the Japanese Motors
are known around Southern California for the
insane, all-night blowouts they put on as much as
for the driving, raucous garage pop they set the
partying to.

· Rather than fight the influence of their
surroundings like so many of their So Cal
contemporaries, Japanese Motors have
channelled it into their music, making tunes
every bit as sun-baked and laid-back as
their coastal environs and rife with positive
imagery.
