The last CD of the week i've stuck to the top of the pile as I think it warrants a great deal of attention & love. It's an album by Je Suis Animal, a Norwegian band who make this gorgeous blend of scando/kraut pop, shimmering celebratory indie & sweet psychedelia. There's smatterings of Broadcast, Lush, Love is All, Stereolab, Electrelane & early MBV, even Fairport Convention spring to mind throughout the odd folksier moments. The quality of songwriting here is top notch, the songs come at you like fantasy bubbles of sound, encapsulating all that's great about modern indie rock. 'Self taught From a Magic Book' is altogether sparkling, playful & highly tuneful, mixing shoegaze elements with motorik kraut flavouring & hazy clipped female vocals. Just packed with comfort zone music for all you stargazing dreamers. Lovely! CD only on AngularA dreamlike mix of Stereolab, Nico, My Bloody Valentine, ‘Self-
Taught Magic From A Book’ is a generous dose of 60’s
psychedelia, a spoonful of naive melody and a pinch of girly
harmony into their magic potion. The result is magical, striking
and uncannily beautiful.
· Meeting at art school in the UK, the band settled in Oslo, Norway in
2004 and began forging a sound inspired by their love for dreamy
melodic pop and all the best bits of their art degree.
· Their debut album ‘Self-Taught Magic From a Book’ was
recorded on a trip to an old community hall, deep within the remote
woodlands of Norway. Besieged by hungry bears and curious locals,
they recorded the album themselves over seven days, going without
sleep, and living on nothing but tea and gingerbread men.
· The album rolls effortlessly from bouncy and jangly to dreamy and
hypnotic, to haunting and sparse - always with a beautiful melody
which will take up permanent residence in your head.
· Interwoven is a particular kind of lyrical storytelling; tales of
unsolved murder mysteries, snowflake collecting, magic spells, and
the joys of sharing milkshakes.
