Minisnap - Whistler

Whistler by Minisnap

4...according to our on Wed 29 Oct, 2008.

Minisnap is Kaye Woodward from legendary NZ indie pop combo The Bats' new band. They have a cool little 7" on US indie Cloudberry, 2 tracks, the first 'Whistler' is an extremely lovely hazy strumathon (with recorders) that makes me think slightly of Dunedin all girl group Look Blue Go Purple, wistful, fragile vocals that drip with a sad sweetness over a jangly C86 imflected foot tapper with a slightly Byrdsian edge. I suppose the Aislers Set may just crop up in comparison but I'd say this band have a more important pedigree to be honest. With interest evergreen in the history of NZ alternative music, I'd "snap" this up cos it's a really lovely tune and the flip is no duffer either!

Where did Minisnap come from? Now that sounds familiar.. yet different .. Minisnap features the songwriting
skills of Kaye Woodward (vocals, guitar) along with fellow Bats, Paul Kean (bass, guitar) and Malcolm
Grant (drums) plus Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents on guitar. Minisnap has had a strong character
since inception, evolving from a dark pop 2 piece with mostly looped rhythm tracks to a 3 piece
with Malcolm over the 2 EPs (In My Pocket 2002 and March Hare 2004, distributed online through Smoke
CDs). On their first album, Bounce Around, Minisnap is a 4 piece with the occassional guest appearance of
Andy Scott on Charango. Minisnap met Roque in Hamburg last May. He is from Cloudberry which is an
indiepop label based in sunny (sometimes stormy) Miami, Florida. Purveyors of the sound of jangly guitars
Cloudberry love vinyl and especially 7” singles. They’re bringing out a 7” of two previously unreleased
Minisnap songs. Artwork: Ian Dingman.

Kaye Woodward’s songs are pretty, delicate pop numbers that, for the most part, float over
chiming guitars.- Sunday Times

After 25 years playing guitar for legendary New Zealand group the Bats, Minisnap is Kaye Wodward's
first attempt at leading her own band. Consider the attempt to be a ringing success. Bilboard.com
