A few hours ago I ate loads of sausages and started feeling sick so I rang my doctor and asked his advice. "Review the new one from Distance", he told me. So here we are with another cold, sterile soundtrack to night-time gridlock from one of Planet Mu's legion of dubstep blokes. Coming at us from the sparsely industrial end of things, Distance is certainly a bit of a dark lord. The one vocal sample (from Jacob's Ladder) features talk of angels and demons laid over spacious beats that sound like Scorn spinning an Atari Teenage Riot LP at 5rpm. His calling card has always been the metal influence, something I've found a bit dodgy on his records in the past although live is a totally different matter.. Brian and I saw him recently and he was probably the highlight of an absolutely stellar lineup, playing a real blinder of a set. I don't know if he's come to the same conclusion as far as all that side of his music's concerned but the chugging Deftones-esque riffs have been toned right down on Repercussions, or they've at least been so heavily processed as to make the source pretty much unrecognisable. No longer do you constantly have the guilty suspicion that you could be listening to an extended 'techno' breakdown from a Linkin Park song. The last track does go back to his old formula but by that time it seems like a welcome nostalgic wink more than anything. More unexpected is the odd ravey hint which seems to be becoming the in thing at the moment what with Zomby and those other boys.. Full marks for showing restraint in not going for constant all-out uber-rumble at all costs too. If you liked his last one or want to sample a little dystopiastep for the first time this effort is an easy recommendation. The CD also comes with a bonus disc featuring all the tracks released on his own Chestplate label which is very generous, I'm sure you'll agree! I don't feel any better for all that though, I think I might start banking with Bupa.Greg Sanders a.k.a. Distance is back with his second album for Planet Mu.
* Following on from his hugely successful debut ‘My Demons’ (Dubstep forum awards album of the year 2007)
Distance continues to shake speakers with his bass-heavy industrial sound.
* In 2006 Distance was featured on the now renowned Mary Anne Hobbs show (Radio One) with six other artists who went on to shape the face of the Dubstep genre. With his second album Distance is still clearly a pioneering force behind the sublow, bass movement. With regular gigs across Europe and the Globe, Distance now has a massive
following drawing in crowds everywhere he plays.
‘Repercussions’ is a beast of an album. Heavy chunky bass lines feature solidly as well as moody ambient soundscapes and sharp snares. From listening, the industrial influences are apparent. It’s clear on closer inspection of
Distance’s love of metal, although not a feature on the album, it is a clear influence on the heaviness and groove of the music at the same time remaining sparse with time to breath between beats, a perfect blend.
The C.D version of the album also features a 2nd c.d. with all Distances own label (Chestplate) releases. Featuring the smash "Victim Support" and "V" and many, many more...
