Essie Jain has her 2nd album out called 'The Inbetween' this very week. Well it's actually been out for a while in America on Ba Da Bing but it surfaces over here on Leaf with a couple of bonus tracks to appease those who've patiently been waiting for it to arrive. Mind you in this day and age what with downloading everything creating a 'wanting it here and now' culture I can't imagine that many folks will wait. Still you can live in hope that there are people out there wanting this. I'd like to think there are as it sounds like a very good album indeed. More immediate than her last album she proves herself to be a clearly capable songwriter. In the press release it says fans of Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith will like this. I can also slightly liken it to that magical Larkin Grimm album about it as she has a certain way about her though she's definitely less feral thah ole Larkin. So there's elements of folk on here as well so it's gonna appeal to a wide range of folks who enjoy a good female singer songwriter album. Lots of piano on it which is appealing to me greatly as I'm starting to feel fried after this week. Yes it's been awful here thanks for askingThe Inbetween is the second album by British-born, New York resident Essie Jain and comes hot on the heels of debut, We Made This Ourselves, which arrived to critical acclaim in March this year.
The album was released this summer by home-of-Beirut US label Ba Da Bing, and appears on Leaf for the rest of the world with two newly recorded bonus tracks, unavailable elsewhere.
The album also features completely new artwork by British artist Luke Drozd.
The Inbetween is more lush and confident than its predecessor, reflecting Essie’s use of a wider range of musicians and instrumentation this time.
While the centerpiece of Essie Jain’s music continues to be the core duo of herself on piano and guitarist Patrick Glynn, the lively NY scene has offered up a revolving cast of additional players including French horn, clarinet, Rhodes, cello and trumpet plus bass and drums
Will appeal to fans of Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, Sufjan Stevens, Elliot Smith and lots of classic British folk
On ‘We Made This Ourselves’:

- "Exquisite. Impressive and affecting" (**** Uncut)
- "Gorgeous debut album" (The Independent)
- "Intimately arresting" (**** Mojo)
