Got a pleasant enough singer songwriter CD in by Holly Dearden. 'The Optimists Daughter' is her debut album and she's certainly got talent. This isn't really my cup of tea but it's all done well. She takes care of piano and vocals and there is some double bass and violin in there too. The music is quite sparse leaving space for her vocals to do the business. Digipak self released job that you can imagine hearing in some posh winebar. Not that you'd find me in such an establishment. I'm more likely to be falling asleep in my pint at the Skull and Weasel.Singer-songwriter Holly Dearden is releasing her first, eagerly awaited album ‘The Optimist’s Daughter’. A familiar face on the London acoustic scene, Holly has already enlisted a loyal fan-base, including ‘Mr Evans’.
Produced by Al Mobbs, former double bass player with Gorillaz and The Good, The Bad & The Queen and now running development label Ambiguous Records, ‘The Optimist’s Daughter’ consists of twelve beautifully-crafted songs of Joni Mitchell/Carole King-inspired folk/blues, with storytelling lyrics reminiscent of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith.
Recent airplay on BBC6 Music (Tom Robinson’s ‘Introducing’ Show as well as the Breakfast show with Shaun Keaveny) confirm that Holly is one to watch for the future.
