Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid - NYC

NYC by Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid

4...according to our on Thu 30 Oct, 2008.

So I whack on the Steve Reid/ Kieran Hebden new collaboration NYC. How many have they done?? Must be at least a thousand by now. And maybe it's me but I think they may all sound the same? Or at least pretty similar. Well the latest skronkfest sees them utilising New York as their inspiration in this new 6 track behemoth. Funk and electronica fused together in perfect harmony. Steve Reid's crashing drums and Kieran's electronics have been a bit much for me on one or 2 of the last releases but this one is surprisingly listenable. At times it sounds a bit like Tortoise what with all the rhythms and electronics and that. Sounds just like 'em in fact. Perhaps they should have called it Chicago? Maybe that would be a bit crass like. It was recorded over 2 days and the album has a very 'jammy' feel. Not unpleasant at all which is what I was suspecting.

Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid recorded ‘NYC’ at
Avatar over two days in February 2008, and the choice of
location is at the heart of what the record is about.
· The whole set, down to the choice of tracks and
their sequencing, was influenced by New York
City’s (in)famous energies.
· This is the fourth record now in the duo’s series of
recordings for Domino Records and is by far their most
accessible yet, featuring some amazing funk driven
workouts amongst some great synth and electronic work
from Kieran.
