Various Production & Gerry Mitchell - The Invisible Lodger

The Invisible Lodger by Various Production & Gerry Mitchell

I'm just giving this Gerry Mitchell/ Various Production 'The Invisible Lodger' album a second listen and I must say there's some magic happening with this collaboration. I think they first teamed up with for a remix on a 7" and it seems the relationship has been most fruitful. The most striking thing about this album is how good Various Production sound when they're not trying to tackle the latest genre. For the most part it's somber, brooding and mournful and Mr Mitchell is a gritty as ever although this album does reveal a slightly lighter side of the man. His poetry and the production seem to work in perfect harmony. He's a supremely talented wordsmith and if you allow yourself to be seduced into his world you'll be rewarded. I'd love to share a bottle of Glen Morangie with him and have him torture my soul with his stark and powerful black poetry. Good stuff on LP and CD on Fire.

The new album from Various Production follows on from 2006’s acclaimed “The World Is Gone” (XL Records) and marks their first full length for Fire Records after a series of  7” remixes for the likes of Dave Cloud & Georgia’s Horse

The duos new album features the vocals of Fire Records mainstay (and resident spoken word genius) Gerry Mitchell.

An original and striking collaboration from two ends of the left field spectrum !

This is a bit of a 'curate's egg' (i.e. good in parts).

It's good for background listening, but you need a bit of volume to really hear Gerry's poetry.

You may get the impression that Gerry is a terminally miserable bu**er, but I promise you I have seen him crack a smile!

Rating: 4 out of 5
