Kontakte / Thelightshines - Split

Split by Kontakte / Thelightshines

4...according to our on Fri 03 Oct, 2008.

Like the Kontakte/Thelightshines split single. It's got a big spiral on the cover (10 points) and a hazy B/W photygwaff that looks like it may have fallen out of a German library 45 years ago (15 points). The Kontakte side is called 'Motorik' and sounds like brooding spacerock/dreampop with a chiming guitar line being eaten by a huge stomping feedback monster whilst a slightly awkward drum machine spits angrilly underneath the chaos. They obviously like Flowchart & Spacemen 3 and sound like they refused to enter the '00s cos they saw the big looming shitstorm that was gonna bland everyone's faces off so fell into a hazy abyss instead. And my ears are all the better for it. The Thelightshines tune on the flip is pretty nice too, more ethereal/spectral but i've run out of words and need the toilet after the Foals single.

The label (Mind Exodus Recordings) was born out of a band showcase night held in Cheshire, where many acts (many signed to small labels) have passed through the door. These nights were simply called Mind Exodus and they showcased the talents of many pysch / folk / acoustic / indie / punk / post punk acts whilst ensuring a) bands got paid b) there was no admission fee. Needless to say the nights have been very well attended and the move to promote a couple of the bands that had appeared, in the shape of a record release, was born. kontakte - their sound reminds the listener of the heady days of Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine et al, on a crash course with Neu ! Solely instrumental and with passing references to a more direct version of Explosions In The Sky. They have recently supported M83, Six By Seven and toured the UK with the Lionheart Brothers during 2008. TheLightshines are a one man folk / drone / pysch mantra merchant with a loop pedal or two in his armoury. comparisions with Spacemen 3 / early Spiritualized will obviously be heard on first listen, but beneath this hazy, lazy mantra there is a artist with much more depth. Recent supports include Dead Meadow, Asteroid#4, Puressence and Sarabeth Tuceck. Limited 7' only.
