Wrangler/ Scanner - 1968 Moog Modular

1968 Moog Modular by Wrangler/ Scanner

4...according to our on Tue 28 Oct, 2008.

Complimenting that amazing-looking Benge CD booklet thing from last week we've got a split 7" in on Static Caravan featuring Benge and Wrangler pissing around on a 1968 Moog Modular and Scanner doing the honours on a 1978 Formant Modular. Benge and Wrangler take the anal log baton and really run with it, offering up a bit of a high-paced blipfest that belies the minimal equipment used. The Scanner side is interesting and undoubtedly good but it's not quite floating my boat at the minute, it takes a more atmospheric tack but ultimately seems a bit more pointless than the flip. It'd be easy to accuse these tracks of being more like those little sound demos you might get on a VST plugin website than tracks that really stand up on their own.. On the big Benge project this'd be totally fair enough since the purpose is as much historical as it is musical, but on a two track 7" it'd be easy for the point to be lost. Whether this is for you is largely going to depend on your level of fetishism for old gear, but it's high quality for sure. It's not quite the cookie from Tesco I had for lunch but it's getting there.

Two Ra Chord blasts of ‘Switched on Bach’ beauty performed by WRANGLER and SCANNER who first met whilst fighting over a copy of ‘Switched on Paddy Kingsland’ at a record fair. These Supraphon pyjama wearing artisans have by loving of various knobs and switches, the sweet caressing of sequencers and event generators and manipulation of patchcords, created the sounds and rhythms for a discerning ear. Whilst Benge / Winters and Scanner have avoided the trap of being academic beard noodlers with this release, they have invoked the spirit of John Baker, White Noise and of course Bob Moog. Featuring sounds made exclusively on the Moog Modular System 3C and the Formant Modular Synthesiser this seven inch is a radiophonic joy, working as a platter to play out as well as a companion piece to their Twenty Systems meisterwork. Fans of Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Oram, Wendy Carlos, Brian Eno or the recent John Baker Tapes are recommended to check this. 300 edition picture disc seven inch in picture sleeve.
