What we say
This record left our briannnnnn feeling ecstatic.
Intrigued by Abe Vigoda. Like the name and certainly like the music. A
disembodied surf guitar, muffled lyrics & wildly catastrophic drums
being flayed set the scene for some echo laden ghost-rock, somewhere
between Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 & Ariel Pink. In fact
'Skeleton' is the closest I've experienced to Thinking Fellers since
the early 90s!!. It's a disorientating but vital collection hypno-pop
& tribal folk-rock. Skewed and skittering, off kilter but melodic,
elastic rhythms sparking off into mad bursts of percussive energy,
vocals hover, off key and spectral. They use distortion wisely as well,
like through some hairy basoon flange setting or summat. There's one
tune that could be like a ravaged Vampire Weekend if they got lost in
some woods for a year and ate bears. Other key influences are Liars'
brand of voodoo mysticism and Animal Collective's boisterous organic
jungle of sound. Totally over the moon to hear a new generation making
quality wibble rock like this. it's incendiary & propulsive,
spilling with agitated polyrhythmic energy and a frantic melodic
discordance. Fucking excellent stuff!

ABE
VIGODA is THE NEW LA PUNK SECRET WEAPON. This is what happens when
musical influences are used in the right way to create something
totally fresh and new. Part punk, part pop, part new wave, ABE VIGODA
bring forth an entirely new sound that is both temptingly beautiful and
melodically tropical. Their first proper full length arrives under the
name “SKELETON” and is a twisted joy ride through the four boys’
private party. Soothing parts are (vaguely) reminiscent of Captain
Beefheart and My Bloody Valentine, while an infectious REGGAETON pulse
makes you want to move your body.
“SKELETON” captures the boys
honing in on their amazing musical direction. There is a dream-like
ambience that seams through entire songs, a beat that sucks the
listener into their world, and vocals that are underneath the music as
much as they are on top of it. Emerging from the same scene as THE
SMELL champions NO AGE and MIKA MIKO, ABE VIGODA keep a DIY attitude.
They play all over the place whenever they can, bringing a vibe of
spontaneity that is all their own. “SKELETON” is what LA sounds like
NOW.
