What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brett feeling happy.

Brian informs me that Neil's Children used to sound like The Dead Kennedy's. Now they sound like hoary old bore-punk crossed with The Cure. I'm being a bit harsh to be honest.. This is just a fairly inoffensive indie rock with a bit of an eighties twinge, nothing massively special but there's an energy to it so we'll give it a pass, ja? 'I'm Ill' is a 7" vinyl record jobbie on Structural Sound.

What the label says:

Neils Children have never been a band to rest of their laurels… since making groundbreaking noise-punk singles such as ‘I Hate Models’ and ‘Always The Same’, their sound has constantly been developing over time. Starting with the chamber pop ‘Another Day’ through to their last single on April 77 Records ‘Reflective/Surface’, the recent incarnation of Neils Children have been forming a sound which is reminiscent of the last 40 years worth of great experimental pop music plus…. something else. This leads us to the single you are now holding in your hands. The brand new Neils Children single ‘Im Ill’, fuses the choppy, awkward-funk guitars of the bands beloved Josef K and A Certain Ration influences with the poppy yet credible melodies of early Orange Juice and 1960’s psychedelic pop groups such as The Idle Race, Tomorrow and Rainbow Ffolly. The song is bitter sweet in typical Neils Children style, with pretty and nostalgic melodies playing out the lyrical theme of deteriorating mental health being caused by a destructive personal relationship. The single is also a benchmark for other reasons, the first being that it is the first release on the bands own label Structurally Sound, the second being that this is the first single to be taken from the bands forthcoming debut album ‘X.Enc.’. Having been recorded and produced completely independently by the band themselves, the single ‘I’m Ill’ and the rest of the new album ‘X.Enc.’ brings to fruition the strong DIY ethics of the band, which have been present since the earliest days of their career. The single’s accompanying video, which was co-directed by the band, Stephen Campbell and the London-based site specific theatre group SKIPtheatre (who also feature in the video) will be available to view from the bands website and Myspace around 2-3weeks before the release date of this single. We urge you to watch it!
