I have to say both Brian and myself liked the Juana Molina 'Un Dia' album that came out last week. So much so we decided to re evaluate it after Clint seemed reasonably non plussed by the whole affair. Though, like Clint I've never really been massively impressed by Juana before this album, but it is definitely more interesting than previous ones. For starters it's really rhythmical... the songs build and continue rhythmical grooves which are nothing but hypnotic. The layers of vocals chucked over weird rhythms really add to the whole proceedings and I have to say it's quite charming. There is a South American feel to the music but seeing as though she's Argentinean you'd probably expect that. At times there's hints of the early Fourtet in there with that sort of acoustic/ electronic funnery. It has a very delicate gentle sound and it's what i thought Mia Doi Todd would sound like but she doesn't sound anything like this. What's in a name eh?'Un Día’ is a hypnotic record alive with melodies that surface imperceptibly before burrowing into your brain. It’s a record informed by an ever shifting and polymorphous sense of groove, played out on wood, cymbal, bombo legüero and woven from electronic glitches.
These songs are bright and playful; the melodies and harmonies of tracks like ‘¿Quien? (Suite)’ lock into place instantly, the gentle and trancelike conversation between coos and sighs and handclaps and murmurs building to nagging, chiming hooks and refrains. ‘Un Dia’ is a warmly human record, Molina’s voice played to the foreground, gliding dreamily through the tangle tentative rhythm on the blissful eddy of ‘No Llama’, sighing urgently along with the spectral guitars and keyboards of ‘Los Hongos De Marosa’.
