UpCdownC - Embers

Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start are a right bunch of nobbers. That's what I did on my computer keyboard and it downloaded a load of Armenian donkey porn and cyber spaff. Also I hate them because their last album just kept on selling and selling and everytime you ordered one in, someone else bought another one and you constantly had to say their name to the rep every couple of bloody days which was a right shitting ballache I can tell thee. I reckon it was some big situationist prank and i'm probably on YouTube being laughed at by fat American children. 'Embers' is their second full length and I have to say, regardless of being bored silly by "post-rock" a few years ago, this lot have a meaty dynamism & their use of electronics is refreshingly understated. They endorse all the usual dinky guitar shapes, moving strings, tersely building dramatics, grandoise drum movements and neo classical flourishes. It's a pompous yet warmly endearing album that fares better for me than their debut. The production is vast and would be suitable to be used to advertise the Scottish tourist board, all wide open vistas and desolate beauty. Pretty cool for this sort of thing. Good stuff in nice package with booklet. CD only.

*  The long awaited return of one of the UKs most popular and respected post rock bands..WITH 2 DRUMMERS

*  ‘Embers’ is the follow up to 2005’s ‘And The Battle Is Won’ which won the following praise:
- "Sounds like your dads prog-rock records forced through a hydra head branded mincer, fed to bearded Mogwai fans and regurgitated into a hardcore kid’s cap. Sick, yes, but satisfying" (Rock Sound).
- "Grandiose ambitions as the only real unifying factors. Leading the new vanguard are Up-C Down-C Left-C Right-C ABC + Start - it’s the cheat instruction for ’Sonic the Hedgehog’ - whose debut is a lesson in musical architecture.
(Kerrang! 4 KKKKs)

- "Brutal and loud, yet melodic and almost orchestral" (The Fly)

- "With riffs as big as fillet steaks and pastoral passages straight outta Middlemarch, And the battle is won is a symphonic sprawl of bucolic tinkering and prolonged colossal feedback that has me reaching for my mathematical dictionary to make sense of it all" (Plan B)

- "Feedback guitar freakouts and extended Can-esque krautrock instrumentals. Magnificent stuff!!! (Piccadilly Records)

*  On ‘Embers’ UPCDOWNC have taken what they have mastered in post rock and integrated doom and desert rock influences.
