Merzbow - Rainbow Electronics 2

Rainbow Electronics 2 by Merzbow

“Rainbow Electronics 2” was the only non-reissue for the now dormant (but legendary Dexter's Cigar imprint. Searching for a Merzbow record to reissue to go alongside of their roster of the unique and influential (including Circle X, Voice Crack, Derek Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Loren Mazzacane-Connors, Folke Rabe, Rafael Toral and Arnold Dreyblatt), they posted a wish list to Masami Akita in Tokyo, parenthetically noting that the 1990 CD “Rainbow Electronics” was a personal chart-topper. It was with complete amazement that they received a master tape for the never-even-rumoured “Rainbow Electronics 2” several weeks later.

The designation “Rainbow” was meant to contrast with the cold, colourlessness of many noise records of early 90s vintage – and indeed, of the much of the current noise scene. Utilizing all the resources of his analogue setup, Merzbow suggested a detailed palette, subtly varied, exhaustingly kinetic, and meant to be PLAYED LOUD.

Not long after this CD was first released (in 1997), Masami Akita moved forward to the realm of digital sound capture and manipulation, his chosen means of preservation since then. In the era of accessible and danceable Merzbow releases such as “Merzbeat” and “Merzbuddha” (relatively speaking), “Rainbow Electronics 2” is a fresh reminder of Merzbow's fully evolved first phase.

Out of print since the turn of the century, “Rainbow Electronics 2” is available again. Don't miss it for a second time!
