Bruce Springsteen is large. Larger than life. The boss. He's massive. He's also the only person alive that could posibly make a song by NY sleaze terrorists Suicide schmaltzy. Yes, Brucie Bonus spearheads the first in this quite exciting range of celebratory 10"s on Blast First Petite to say happy mofo beeday to Alan Vega who's managed to get to 60 without stumbling into the city's sewers and being eaten by a mutant croc and I just feel like I wanna burn the American flag on hearing 'Dream Baby Dream'. It's awful to these ears, pure anathema, like aural battery acid burning my brain. But his voice has such a rich, powerful timbre you still get slightly sucked in, imagining cuddling your sweet Darlene and waving your stars & stripes Zippo back & forth with a tear welling up, threatening to engulf your face in a river of steaming hot mawkishness. Better flip to an unreleased archive version done as it's fuckin' supposed to be by Rev & Vega on The Cars' midnight special in '79. The synth line stirs your soul whilst electronic crickets & fireflies chirrup gleefully in a pink rubber casino in your mind, whilst the vocals are like Elvis having a last gasp on the bog. It's dark motorik cabaret music from a sleazy bar on planet B-52s and is quite remarkable. Shame Bruce had to reduce the song to it's lowest common denominator to reach out to his fawning masses. It's no 'I'm on Fire' mate. Beat the Devil are like a rubbish MC5 according to Brett but they weild a perky organ & the drummer sounds like he's having fun. They re-arrange 'Mr Ray'. This is limited to 4000 and we only have a couple of dozen left so look sharpish!!!A/ Bruce Springsteen – Dream Baby Dream - The Boss solo, live from his 2005 Devils & Dust Tour pays tribute to Mr Alan Vega. A haunting interpretation of the Suicide classic, a heartfelt lament for "lost America". Surely should be an alternative Obama campaign song ! B1 Suicide - Dream Baby Dream (Midnight Special Live TV 1978) Recently recovered from a lost Suicide vault......1978 The Cars are America's biggest band. ....they air their own live TV "Midnight Special" nationwide on NBC and invite their pals Suicide. America, untouched, sleeps soundly through this event, gathering it's strength to throw shoes at Mr Vega & Mr Rev when they open for The Cars on the stadium tour. B2 Beat The Devil - Mr Ray- Sadly now defunct contemporary New York band. Singer Shipa Ray tears Suicide a new one! Edition of 4000 black vinyl/Cover Image:Edward Mapplethorpe (brother to Robert Mapplethorpe)
