Rating: ecstatic This record left Terry Foster feeling ecstatic.

Bought one direct from the band a month ago.

Album of the summer for me.

No hype for the Hussy's but there should be.

Both a great pop band and a proper independant band as well.

What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

The Hussy's are Glasvegas's mates and are taking the lowroad to Ver' Glas's highroad. They got their pet postsquirrel to personally deliver their digipak album to us. We had to reward it with some of my Nobbys sweet chilli cashews though. Now, I must be honest here, a couple of their songs here make me cringe a little, as it's fairly generic air guitar indie pop/rock with female lyrics with some dubious sounds but on the whole this is eclectic, nicely formed music for young, fun, brash teenagers/early 20 somethings, not for grumpy fat idiots obsessed with The Fall. On the double-plus side, the lass who belts 'em out, Fili, has one of those glorious, spunky voices like Cerys Matthews or Kirsty MacColl, a tinge of a Scots burr under a tingly, soulful exterior. I'd never be one to describe a voice as fully rounded but her earthy tones are totally pure & homely. And the music veers from countrified foot-tappers to ironic 80's pisstakes to straight hook laden swingin' indie pop, like little lost chart hits! The nearest comparison I can muster is somewhere between Theaudience & Misty's Big Adventure with a bit of Belly & Sons & Daughters in there maybe? Huge fun indeed, indulge yourself in 'Super Pro', digipak CD only.

What the label says:

The Hussy’s are a 5-piece band from Glasgow.

The Hussy’s songwriting is concise, catchy and punchy, fronted by 22-year-old vocalist Fili.

The Hussy’s have released 3 EPs and a single on Weekender Records, and also an album in Japan on the Quince label. The band have picked up airplay on various radio stations, including Radio 2 and XFM, as well as filming for several TV shows with the BBC and other networks.

From Autumn 2006 to Spring 2007 the band toured extensively throughout the UK and are currently in the studio recording an album of new songs.

In May 2007 the band released “We Expected” as a single in the UK. It gained excellent reviews and reached number 22 in the Radio 1 indie chart.

Musically The Hussy’s have elements of Madness, Cardigans, Kirsty McColl and Motown/Ska.

What they’ve said:

“singer Fili is Scotland's answer to Cerys Matthews from Catatonia - although Fili on this EP sings in tune, too. Throaty and rich, she wraps her tonsils around four wise-cracking songs. They're going to be your next favourite band.” – Rick Fulton, The Daily Record

“Like Madness with Kirsty McColl singing at some points, they also have the great lost Rezillos song in Rock Concert.” – Keith Bruce, The Herald

“Any A & R man worth his salt should sign this band now” – Janice Long, Radio 2

“The Hussy's stormed onto the scene last year with the brilliant 'Tiger EP'. If their appearance in Alloa supporting El Presidente as part of Xfm Scotland's 5 Night Stand is anything to go by, The Hussy's are going to be major contenders.” – Jim Gellatly, XFM Scotland

“Fantastic pop music: terrific melodies, punchy vocals, Beach Boys harmonies and pop-punk spark. The arrangements are marvels, freakin’ awesome!” – Sean Michaels, The Skinny

“Each song the Hussy's play is pop-par-excellence dipping into whichever musical genre they feel like and wrapping it into a bonafide contemporary pop song ala Scissor Sisters. "Marty" starts off sounding like the best bits of every Xmas song ever written and then manages to put Elvis Costello, Madness and Chas and Dave into the mix. "Tiger" a 1930s style Charleston sounds like it could have come off the Grease soundtrack and "We Expected" is a romp through mid 90s indie. The Hussy's have got a bright future head of them.” – Alex McCann, Designer Magazine
