Another Skull Disco 12" from Shackleton. Number 10 infact and it's 'Soundboy's Suicide Note'. 'The Rope Tightens' is a down tempo cut with that bloke (Vengeance Tenfold I think). This is super mega dark stuff that reminds me of Kode 9 and the Spaceape's more minimal early stuff like 'Sign Of The Dub'. It's congatastic dub vibes on the flip... I'm slightly distracted by a conversation behind me where Phil is talking about how well chicken and bacon go together and then there it is! The bassline kicks in and all bass worshipers dreams are answered for this is one seriously low frequency. There's a vocal sample about dreams and minimal percussion .. But man that bassline just kills it. Seriously heavy bass action. What the label says: continues to push the musical envelope, reaching beyond the realms of dubstep into some dark fissure of future dread history. Drawing from a familiar palette of beats and bass, ‘The Rope Tightens…’ scatters rambling paranoiac poetry across a rushing moonscape soundstage, reprised in the brooding storm of ‘…But The Branch Is Weak’. ‘In the Void’ adds dashes of ethnic strings to colour the darkness slightly, and ‘Shortwave’ finishes up with a rolling barrage of percussion, subs and icy gusts. 5/5 (recommended) (Words by Dicon) a1 Shackleton - The Rope Tightens.. a2 Shackleton - ..But The Branch Is Weak b1 Shackleton - In The Void b2 Shackleton - Shortwave

About the humble 12":

The 12" is the big brother of records as it's an fatter version of the 7", with a vast scope for an array of remixes and B sides. They are slightly less portable their smaller inched brethren but they're by no means inferior. Often the grooves are spaced wider apart and thus sound much much better. You can fit ample tracks on and if worse comes to worse they make fine plates (should your crockery go awol). Yes, there's a hole but holes are easy to sort out. Once again they're available on many different colours and guises. The best thing about a 12" is the potential vastness of the artwork. Also playable on many speeds!!
