That Shackleton and Mordant Music split 10" last year (I think) was a stroke of genius. The Mordant track was astonishing. So naturally I'm excited that they've got another split out... First up is the Shackleton side. You can recognize this guys stuff easily as he's honed his own sound and keeps refining it. El Din (Part One) has all his trademake elements is place. The eerie synths, spacious tablas and congas and the crucial fat bassline keeping it dark and deeply atmospheric with plenty of delay and reverb to get your rib cage rattling. My expectations of the Mordant track were particularly high after the recent effort and it's kind of a follow up tune drawing on a similar sound palate and groove. It's more of a techno tune than dubstep really although the lines are really being blurred at the moment which is always good. 'Olde Wobbly' is a real ass shaker with big full fat production sound - crisp and crunchy claps and snares and an ace arpegiated post-Moroder disco synth line. Phil is reminded of 'Sons of Fascination' and 'Sisters Feelings Call' era Simple Minds. A good 'un.Mordant Music spore the shellac once again on 10" vinyl with staunch cohort
Sam Shackleton...this will be the third missile from the Nesst involving ol' bones himself with a further one already teed up...'El Din
(part one)'on the 'A' unfurls in classic Shackleton fashion deploying his compulsive percussive lure followed by the eventual spilling
over of bass and swirling atmospheres for which he is renowned...'El Din (part one)' throws a blanket over your your head from
behind and spins you off into the dunes...over on the 'AA' Mordant Music continue to chart the uneasy rave wake of 'Hummdrumm'
with the descending sequencer labyrinth of 'Olde Wobbly'...this claustrophobic ode to stifled corners in densely packed clubs is filled
with strange tunings and forlorn fanfares...one for the wrong MoMent...stay perched for the next instalment...
