The Saddle Song/ Sweet Boy by Mary Epworth & The Jubilee Band

5...according to our on Thu 28 Aug, 2008.

Mary Epworth and the Jubilee Band next. This is a cool little 7" that blends a triumphant folk-ish female lyric with a pumping brass band backing to make a really sweet pop tune. The closest comparison I can muster is mid period Beatles crossed with a more grounded Abba! It's a little like 'Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite' with perhaps the lady from Bodies of Water stomping jubilantly down the street with a big flag hollering a call to arms standard. But it's got the feel of a lost 60s classic, it feels so well rounded and familiar, comforting & homely and has the essence of an alternative dimension smash. I want everyone to hear 'Saddle Song', it should rule the airwaves! Then again I was brought up on Steeleye Span.........Ltd 7"...

This is Mary Epworth and the Jubilee Band's first 'proper' release after a couple of sold out and sought after cdr tour e.p.s, and comes ahead of the full studio album, which is being obsessively constructed in a variety of small and large studios as we speak.

On this limited 7" release, (which contrary Mary describes as "a pub shanty") she and the band conjure up the presence of phantom Morris dancers, drunken sea-dogs, spectral horses and haunted woods, whilst having enough guts, rust and teeth to steer clear of any    fairyland folk-psych whimsy.

"So exuberant in its ragged glory that you would be very hard-hearted indeed if you weren't moved to smile, to join its rutted rolling procession, its pilgrimage, its parade of smashing cymbals, shivering violins, clamorous voices and a horn section just roused from sleep, but game for the journey to Rome, to Damascus, Samarra, Mecca or simply the end of a cobbled London street."
