What we say
This record left our Brian feeling happy.
Mmmmmm! A 'Detroit Vs. Sheffield' face-off is what The Black Dog have lined up on their new 12" through Soma. I was pretty let down by their last album 'Radio Scarecrow' so this 4 tracker is an entirely welcome bonus. The main track 'Train By the Autobahn' is re-jigged twice by the esteemed Robert Hood, one of the few people on the planet capable of constantly pioneering work within a field as restrictive as minimal techno. His first mix is pretty ace actually, spacious, echo laden....dub effects careering off frisky hi-hats, an hypnotic bass kick and some euphoric snare rhythms. He's a bloody master of his craft is this man, a proper astral groover. Black Dog's own remix is a more downtempo travelogue, blending classic mid 90's ambient shades into a sweet mid-paced techno mover, flecked with some nice acid burbling & drifting FSOL-ish stargazing! The other R. Hood mix is much more minimal, like ambient electronica with a repetitive piano refrain. Like Terry Riley on E? It morphs into a spiraling, sensuous slightly balearic techno piece with such beautiful subtlety I feel like crying! Old Warped types Forgemaster's push their Bass Soldier to the fore to tear up the only other tune, 'Siiiipher'. It's a brief, brooding, electroid piece with stark snare action, waspish keys, a slightly future-dubsteppa rhythm and a slightly aquatic vibe. Not a duffer in sight, this is a fine remix project we feel and should appeal to most lovers of progressive electronica & classic techno!
What the label says:
Following the success of ‘Radio Scarecrow’, The Black Dog step into the deep with their third EP from the album. ‘Train By The Autobahn’ receives the full treatment by the forefather of minimal techno, Robert Hood. Add to that a buoyant rework from The Black Dog, while the Bass Soldier is set loose on ‘Siiiipher’. In his ‘DJ Remix’, Hood’s relentless drive takes the track through Detroit’s darkest zones, while the crisp beats and layered percussion allow the track to flow perfectly; this is a real slice of the future.
