Sergeant Buzfuz are a much more trad indie affair. 'Here Comes the Popes (pt3)' is somewhere between Dexy's, I Ludicrous & Hefner, lolloping bass, a kind of baggy back beat jiving with some perky strings and some arch witty yelping lyricism from the bloke on the mic. It's a pretty unfashionable record, the sort I just wish people would make a lot more of. Kind of "kill the hair bands, this is your Dad talking" attitude. If you like the things what come out on the itsy bitsy Blang! records like David Cronenberg's Wife and all that real heartfelt indie business then this catchy, chirpy cock sparrer of a ditty should make you damn proud to have big lugs. Here Come The Popes Part 3 is the latest in a series of songs from Sergeant Buzfuz cataloguing the sordid history of the Papacy - a string-driven romp through the 11th and 12th centuries. "Something a bit special" (Tom Robinson, BBC 6). Sgt Buzfuz hail from the North and the Midlands but are based in South London. Here Come The Popes Part 3 is from their forthcoming 4th album High Slang, due in early 2009. The album is a mixture of pop, punk, psychedelia, Arabic percussion, Celtic folk, remix culture, classical, drone-rock and improv music. B side Dentist To The Stars is a sinister tale of an anaeshetist who dreams of killing a celebrity patient as they slumber to a soundtrack of shimmering dulcimer. . "REM would kill for songs like these" (Unpeeled) . "Amazing" (Sky Saxon) "quietly staggering beauty" (Get Ready To Rock). "impossible to dislike" (Rocksound) "intense, original, clever, funny and moving" (Sounds XP)"modern day folk music - rich, warm and string laden" (Morning Star). After two solo albums as Sergeant Buzfuz Murphy released 2006’s acclaimed The Jewelled Carriageway with a band line-up of drums, cello, violin and dulcimer on the fledgling Blang label, an offshoot of the Yorkshireman’s monthly Blang nights at London’s 12 Bar Club. In 2007 London antifolk singer JJ Crash joined Murphy at Blang and the label has since released a series of oddball 7 inchers and outsider songwriting, most notably that of David Cronenberg’s Wife.Upcoming Gig Dates : August 30th BIRMINGHAM Moseley Folk Fest, Late September London launch gig TBC
