The Coral make a welcome return to our ears with a singles compilation booster called 'Being Somebody Else'. It's their most 70's Radio 2 moment yet, reminding me of the likes of Cat Stevens. The guitar sounds crystaline, like cotton candy being strummed to perfection whilst the vocals are easy going sing-song genius and the strings chirrup merrily over the top like jaunty icing on a fresh cream cake. You imagine shaggy dogs leaping around in a sunny park whilst some loved-up Scousers breakdance to Gerry Rafferty records and laughing girls with shiny hair in bikinis play frisbee. It's perfect pop, like all their best singles. Hopefully the 'Best of...' will tear up the christmas market like The Beautiful South did and when you get to an Xmas party there'll be summat better than Celine Dion to be heard round the in-laws. Or summat. Ace! 7" only. What the label says: This is a ltd edition 7" heavyweight vinyl, taken from the forthcoming "Singles Collection" Best of.

About the humble 7":

The humble 7" is the smallest of the vinyl formats (not including the ridiculous 5") and it's the perfect medium for transporting a couple of new songs by up and coming bands straight into your ears. They're fun and they take up less space in your house than something bigger would. They come in a plethora of exciting colours and fantastical packages, and you can fit about 14 minutes onto one 7". You may have to get up every few minutes to put a new record on but think of the exercise. Don't forget every record you buy plays at least 2 speeds (depending on your stereo) and you need to play all records on all speeds to get the maximum joy from your purchase.
