Smoke Fairies
Living With Ghosts

This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.
Smoke Fairies next. A husky voiced lady attempts seduction of Dangerous Brian's ears to no real avail cos she's not singing in a Lancashire accent and the slidey/steel sounding guitar is a bit too windswept American and doesn't sound like The Fall trapped in a bin outside a newsagents in Salford at 2 am on a rainy Wednesday. It's pretty damned good though, very mature and slightly gothic country stuff. I feel like someone's been buried alive over a infidelity misdemeanor and that the sheriff's been stabbed in the back. There's a railroad in my mind and a dusky femme fatale has tied the hotel owner's dog to it. There's a serious Nina Nastasia vibe to the second track especially, they're that good but unfortunately I only have room for one Nina in my life. I don't cheat. oh no sir......'Living With Ghosts' is Ltd 7" only on Music For Heroes!

What their label says...
With their intermingling of deeply English sensibilities and American Deep South moods, the twisted blues that the Smoke Fairies conjure up is their own special kind of magic. Now it’s time for their first single, ‘Living With Ghosts’ / ‘Troubles’, which is set for release as a hand numbered limited edition of five hundred 7” vinyl and also for download on July 28th.
The Smoke Fairies, Katherine and Jessica, first got together at secondary school in Sussex, before decamping to the US and Canada, spending time in Vancouver and New Orleans. Since returning to the UK they have started to get public and critical recognition for their unique, ethereal and hypnotic blend of folk and blues, playing guest spots with Bryan Ferry, Magic Numbers and on Jarvis Cocker’s Meltdown Festival.
Both songs feature the haunting vocals and harmonies that weave a spell of yearning and loss. “A lot of our songs involve narratives about leaving something behind. Living With Ghosts is about someone who can’t get away from, and is haunted by their past,” explains Jessica. While, the finger picking and bottleneck guitar on both songs strongly evoke their blues influences: explains Katherine, “for us, folk and blues have the same roots, the same darkness to them.”
