The Magistrates... This weeks new hot shit. We had squillions of pre orders for this so it's a one per person job. I was so not expecting it to sound like Jamie Lidell when it came on! Indie soul music!! The voice and vocal melody reminds me of Prince. I kind of like it which I didn't think would happen. It's smooth but rough... the music sounds velvety and smooth but it's recorded in a raw kind of way. There's a nice organ throbbing in the background along the soulful vocals. Seriously though... I was not expecting this to be soul music. I think they've signed to XL now... Make This Work is white vinyl and 1 copy per person before they all go!Hailing from in and around the Essex town of South Woodham Ferrers, Magistrates have quickly become one of the most talked about new bands around. Forming in 2007, their ethos so far has been strictly DIY, with debut single ‘Make This Work’ recorded in guitarist Mark Brandon’s bedroom on an old school 16-track and its accompanying video shot in the very same bedroom and directed by Mark’s brother.
However, within these ordinary surroundings, the hugely ambitious Magistrates are making extraordinary music. They’re as likely to cite Prince and Michael Jackson as influences as they are Talking Heads and David Bowie and they’ve taken the best bits from these most glittering of inspirations and come up with something truly distinctive and original.
