OVERVIEW:
Pisshead/Boat Song is the debut double-A-side single from Brighton’s
The Miserable Rich, an acoustic band with heavy hearts and big tunes.
Designed as a bar-room chamber quintet, The Miserable Rich are Will
Calderbank, Mike Siddell, Jim Briffet, Rhys Lovell and James De
Malplaquet. Their remit to play new songs in a time-honoured fashion is
exemplified in their haunting cover of Hot Chip’s Over And Over, which
is currently doing the rounds on the blogs and receiving Radio 1 plays.
Part of an artistic group named The Wilkommen Collective, the
band’s ranks include players with (and former members of) Hope Of The
States, Kate Walsh, Clearlake and Shoreline. Using De Malplaquet’s Hove
home as a hub, they have been recording together since 2007, and the
beautiful music they make is soon to be released – this double A-side
single precedes the band’s debut album, Twelve Ways To Count, in
November.
The first track on this debut release, Pisshead, is an
ode to alcoholism, blending tortured verse with happy/sad music and
neat references to Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western themes,
including a whistled introduction and a gently twanging jew’s harp.
The
next track, Boat Song, finds the band in a more late-night, reflective
mood – it’s a lullaby written for De Malplaquet’s mother.
Signed
to top new Manchester independent label Humble Soul, already home to
fellow good souls Liz Green, Aidan Smith, Denis Jones and John
Fairhurst.
