Hauschka - Ferndorf

Ferndorf by Hauschka

4...according to our on Thu 18 Sep, 2008.

Hauschka are back with their latest twinkle tastic album on Fat Cat entitled 'Ferndorf'. Immediately I can hear bits of Yann Tiersen in there. In fact if you're familiar with the Goodbye Lenin soundtrack there's definitely some washes of that in here.Very moving neo-classical sounding gear with a bouncy cheeky feel to it... almost playful in fact. It conjuring up images of loads of old wooden and metal toys coming to life and playing with each other. Metal soldiers stabbing small wooden gnomes in the face. Can you get wooden gnomes? I'd like to think someone somewhe is making wooden gnomes especially for this purpose. Surely there's a gap in the market. I'm sure if Hauschka ever reads this he'll be delighted to know that his music conjures up such lovely imagery. Sillyness aside it's a serious album for folks into serious music. Oodles of piano and strings combined to make a delicious noise that sounds good enough to eat. It veers between the playful and the more miserable.... Fans of old Max Richter I reckon will lap this beauty up 'n all!!

Hauschka’s second album for FatCat’s 130701 imprint offers a brilliant advance on 2007’s ‘Room To Expand’. Where the previous album comprised mostly solo recordings of Hauschka’s ‘prepared’ piano, ‘Ferndorf’ is a far more expansive and fully-realised album, with many of the tracks also featuring a string duo, enabling an increased solidity.

Will appeal to fans of John Cage, Arvo Pärt, Max Richter, Goldmund and Sylvain Chauveau. Recorded between October 2007 and March 2008, all of the tracks and string arrangements were composed and recorded by Hauschka. Recorded with overdubs from Schirmer on Cello and Sabine Baron on violin, with additional assistance from Bernhard Voelz on trombone.

Hauschka’s cultural stock has increased considerably, based particularly around the revelation of his live performances, including rapturously received support tours in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter.
