What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Phil feeling happy.

The Bombay Bicycle Club are this weeks latest hot shit to grace the stereo. Each week we're inundated with the latest sounds from the world of music and this is their 3rd attempt to try and thrust us into submission where we declare them the saviours of music. Evening/ Morning is the name of this beast and the immediate comparison is a more bouncy Placebo. I think it's the singer's slightly wobbly voice as he's got one of those sheepy whiny sounding things. The guitar melodies at times reminds me of the poppier side of Sonic Youth and at times I can hear an Interpol ish thing (mainly cos of the production...). It's not a bad single at all. Decent pop tune at heart...

What the label says:

“Music so precociously intelligent and artful that it seems to have been beamed down from another planet” – NME
“Brilliant” – The Sunday Times
“Impossibly young and impossibly talented” – The Fly
“Immensely precocious talent” – The Independent
 “A music lover’s dream” – Artrocker

Off the back of the two critically acclaimed EPs (self released on their own label) last year, Bombay Bicycle Club return with brand new single ‘Evening/Morning’ to be released on London’s premier indie label, Young & Lost Club in August.

Upon listening to the single it’s easy to forget how impossibly young the band are and equally how improbably talented they are. This is the sound of one of the most talked about new bands in the country, fast becoming one of the best.

Recorded by Jim Abbiss, ‘Evening/Morning’ demonstrates how Bombay Bicycle Club are progressing at a startling rate. Showcasing a heavier and more urgent side to the band, the single opens with military drum rolls which are quickly steamrollered by a titanic, Sonic Youth meets Stone Roses riff.

Lead singer Jack Steadman is quietly growing into the role of bona fide star front man. His lyrics still belie his youth and sound like those sung by a world-weary man, yet his tremulous delivery shimmers with the passion of what it is to be young and alive.

On the flip side of the single ‘You Already Know’ nods towards the vast amount of Appalachian folk the band have been devouring in the last six months. Recalling Richard Thompson, Tim Buckley, and Vetiver at their most sensuous, ‘You Already Know’ hints at what a stunning prospect their first album will be.
