What we say

Rating: happy This record left our BRIAN D feeling happy.

We're all quite taken with this Benjamin Wetherill CD on Ba Da Bing. He's based around these parts IE west Yorkshire, but he sounds like he's from another galaxy, a galaxy where folk musicians use their prowess to seduce the ladies with their silver tongue or in Benjamin's case use their guitar as a form of heartbreak therapy. He's a melancholy chap but his music is very sweet & rather touching taking in strong elements of Nick Drake with a touch of Banhart's waver (without the punchable histrionics) This lovely CD takes a team effort. Coming up the left side, dribbling like a goon is Phil who offers up "Big Eyes-esque, very pan-European" Brett passes across "English whimsy" in his deepest foreboding Yorkshire grunt whilst Phil sprints to slam "pastoral" into the metaphorical goal. Phew! This is smashing stuff, very classic sounding old skool folk with lavish yet simple embellishment. What a talent this fella is turning out to be! 'Laura' is CD only

What the label says:

Recorded in a disused 19th-century palace on the outskirtsof Budapest, Benjamin Wetherill’s first album captures theintimacy of a delicate folk idiom along with the innovationof original technique and approach. Wetherill, a Leedsnative who has been making his own music for almost a decade, plays intricate fingerpicked guitar passages, and singswith a lilting style unlike anybody recording today. A startlinglisten for anyone looking for truly talented musicianswholly focused on their own vision.Jeremy Barnes, A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s inventivesongwriter, heard Wetherill while touring and offered toproduce his debut album. Barnes enlisted his Hun HangárEnsemble of Hungarian musicians to assist in the recording, delicately expanding Wetherill’s songs to include afeather orchestra of light touches and subtle accents, blendingsentiments of pre-war European jazz with early Englishpathos. The result is Laura, an album as emotional as it is detailedand fragile. Folk music has enjoyed a resurgence oflate, but with Wetherill one always seems to get somethingrefreshingly different—true, original music in a mannernever quite done before, with the capacity to combine amystifying sense of the early 19th century with a 20th centuryoutlook. The effect is startling.
