What we say
This record left our Phil feeling ecstatic.
When Chris from Bracken popped in with a copy of the Eno About The Need CD he told us it wasn't an easy listen. He obviously wanted to prepare us for a difficult ride and on first listen I decided it's not a difficult ride at all. He was lying to us as it is in fact great! For those who don't know about the history of the album it's a companion album to the 'We Know About The Need' album which was released as a lathe cut vinyl version of one copy only. The LP has traversed the continents and the recipients were encouraged to play the LP and also add something to the artwork. For those who aren't familiar with lathe cuts they deteriorate quite quickly so you'll have loads of crackles and whizzles after a few plays. Depending on which side of the camp you sit in this is either a problem or it enhances the whole listening experience. Being a vinyl head my ears are used to crackles so I'm happy for the clicks and pops to happen. The artwork has been physically remixed (as such) and the vinyl itself has been kind of remixed (more added to really) by the sheer fact it has been played. It's undoubtedly an interesting concept. Musically we have a much more mellow sedate experience than the Bracken album. It's much more droney and spacey sounding... dare I say ethereal? It's like some ghosts have come along and sucked the beats out of the album and left some weird spooky ghostly (en)trails. Occasionally some vocals eerily appear and I have to say the whole ghostly thing at times reminds me of some of the moments from the recent Caretaker album. I think fans of Kranky will lap this up and personally I much prefer this to the We Know About The Need album but that's just where my head is. It's a thoroughly beautiful listening experience that fans of drone, ambience and experimental pop music will literally shit themselves for. I've just listened to it twice and I've had to change twice..... better turn it off.... Limited to 500 only in a hand made, hand numbered digipak and it's available from us a wee bit earlier than it is anywhere else. Also included is a booklet with the whole story and artwork in. It's self released on the pun tastic 'Ears Hoping' label.....
What the label says:
INFO: In March 2007 Bracken issued “Eno about the need” a double vinyl LP in an edition of exactly one copy. Since that time the LP has been circulating around the globe, being passed from listener to listener. The hope was that it would one day return, covered in graffiti, dust and scratches, with a few stories to tell. The LP did indeed come back, semi-destroyed, in June 2008 and we now present a CD re-issue of it’s content.
The majority of the audio was originally salvaged from already decaying tape loops - sounds which were grainy and otherworldly - and it was hoped that as the record degraded and became warped and scratched, the listeners would unwittingly contribute towards the final record.
The re-issue set comprises of a CD transfer mastered from the vinyl and a full colour booklet illustrating the artistic contributions made by the people who looked after the record. It is housed in a handmade, stamped and numbered recycled card sleeve and is strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide.
MORE ABOUT BRACKEN: Bracken is a free wheeling project fronted by Chris Adams. They issued their debut LP “We know about the need” on Anticon records in January 2007. In another world, Chris is co-captain of the good ship Hood (Domino Records).
