Heaviness - Heaviness

Heaviness by Heaviness

4...according to our on Thu 17 Jul, 2008.

In this week are a bunch of CDs from the Quince label which is a long long way away in Japan. Not a long way if you live in Japan perhaps (unless you live at the other side from where the label is based) but a long way from here, un-sunny credit crunched England with it's cash strapped pauper public and expensive buses. First Leeds (our bus service) have put their prices up 8% this week.... this is the 2nd big increase this year and they're trying to drive people out of their cars eh? It's cheaper for me to drive to work now. Bunch of cunts the lot of 'em. Anyhoo onto Heaviness on the Quince label. They do the whole shoegaze thing rather well and it all sounds very Creation records circa 1989. Think My Bloody Valentine, Lush and Slowdive all mixed up together in a big pot and it would come out something like this. It's done reasonably well and if you're into shoegazey pie then this will be up your chubby (kirsty) alley. I like it as it makes me feel like a teenager again. Anything that makes me feel young, stupid and forget that I'm old and riddled with problems has to be a good thing.

Biography:
Heaviness is a shoegaze band based in
Stockholm, Sweden. Phono-geographically
speaking, their sound lies approximately half
way between over there and somewhere else,
provided somewhere else is located in a
container. They do stick pretty close to the
shoegaze ethic, both in terms of sound,
aesthetics. One of the reasons we waited so
long for their first record, released in Autumn
2006 was that it cost so damn much. The other
co-primary reason is that they’re three young
perfectionists. The lineup consists of David,
Daniel and Emma. It’s hard to say whether the
other David is also in the band (it certainly
seems like it at times); he does the projections
for the shows. David and Daniel used to play
together in both Montage and Vacuum Cleaner
(although they sucked). Swedish indie-pop icon
Terry Ericsson said they were the best thing
since My Bloody Valentine but that wasn’t really
an appropriate thing to say. The guy’s a clown.
Yeah, they do sound a bit like MBV on the first
listen but only a bit. We had to go a long time
without any decent shoegaze for a reason. That
idiot in the Heaviness shout-box (saying
something like ‘another MBV rip-off, nice try’)
was, oh, I seem to have used that noun
prematurely in this sentence. But whatever, it’s
not the case.

Album Description:
An experimental three-piece based in
Stockholm, Heaviess might be one of the best
things since My Bloody Valentine; indeed, this
Swedish band's own brand of mayhem pop has
been very well received in the neo-shoegaze
camp. Electric violin, driving drums, flowing
guitar, and bittersweet vocals forge a path
through a forest of anxiety, longing and
oppression. The songs strike you down with
their brute force only to lift you up with the
beauty of their melodies. Live they have been
known to blow away unsuspecting audiences.
This is their acclaimed debut album in a special
Japanese issue featuring a bonus track and
new artwork.
